about

Tom Oakes - Solo Wooden Flute

This mini album is a small taste of where I'm at as a flautist and composer at this slightly weird and transitional point in my career. The recording takes the form of 5 new compositions and 2 sets of Irish traditional music. My idea I guess is that these traditional sets should clash slightly with the modern nature of the other music but the fact that it's one instrument, the same breath, the same microphones, the same brain! will hopefully give you a sense of uniformity and a sense of how I think about music.

The compositions are loosely based on journeys in 6 very different cities. I'm hugely inspired by urban landscapes and further experimentations into that will appear on Comfort Food in due course. In this recording though my experiences of both place and people in (and from) Mumbai : India, Helsinki : Finland, Reykjavik : Iceland, Marrakech : Morocco, Newcastle : England and Edinburgh : Scotland have developed into compositions and in the case of 'Formations' improvisation.

The traditional sets are where I come from as a flautist. It's the roots of the whole thing. A grounding if you will. The tunes here are favourites of mine at the time of recording. Some I've learned recently, some were learned well over a decade ago. Traditional music lives in the minds and fingers of the musicians. We (The players) hold thousands of tunes in our minds and we remember them in a myriad of different ways. These tunes came back into my head (and fingers) on the day of recording. They're fantastic tunes but on a different day or time they too could have been something totally different.
